The Head of the Cardiac Surgery Department at Quirónsalud University Hospital La Luz and Quirónsalud University Hospital Pozuelo has once again been recognized by the Spanish medical community as one of the country’s leading specialists.
Dr. Alberto Forteza Gil, Head of the Cardiac Surgery Department at Quirónsalud University Hospital La Luz and Quirónsalud University Hospital Pozuelo, has been recognized once again as one of Spain’s best cardiac surgeons in 2026 in the annual ranking published by El Confidencial.
This distinction highlights a professional career defined by clinical excellence, innovation in cardiovascular surgery, and an unwavering commitment to advancing cutting-edge techniques for the treatment of heart disease.
The El Confidencial ranking is compiled through a rigorous selection process in which an independent panel of experts preselects ten candidates in each of the 34 medical specialties evaluated. The final selection is then made by Spain’s medical community through a nationwide voting process.
An International Reference in Aortic Valve Repair Surgery
Dr. Forteza is widely recognized as one of Spain’s leading experts in aortic valve repair surgery and aortic disease, fields in which he has developed an outstanding clinical, academic, and research career.
In addition to leading the Cardiac Surgery Departments at Quirónsalud University Hospital La Luz and Quirónsalud University Hospital Pozuelo, he is co-founder of the Aortic Repair Center, an internationally renowned center dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of aortic diseases, established in 2024 together with the distinguished German cardiac surgeon Dr. Hans-Joachim Schäfers.
Previously, Dr. Forteza served as Head of the Cardiac Surgery Department at Puerta de Hierro University Hospital, where he led the heart transplant program and gained extensive experience in highly complex cardiac procedures.
He graduated in Medicine from the University of Salamanca, where he also earned his PhD cum laude. His postgraduate training includes fellowships at some of the world’s most prestigious institutions, including Toronto General Hospital (Canada), Hannover Medical School (Germany), and the Mayo Clinic (United States).
His professional achievements have also been recognized through his designation as a Fellow of the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS), and by his previous role as President of the Aortic Disease and Valvular Heart Disease Section of the Spanish Society of Cardiology.
Recognition of Medical Excellence
The initiative promoted by El Confidencial aims to highlight the outstanding quality of healthcare in Spain by recognizing physicians who excel in clinical practice, research, medical education, and innovation.
The official awards ceremony will take place on 21 September 2026 at the Nouvel Building of the Reina Sofía National Museum Art Centre in Madrid.
